Join us in a look back of 2018 and what to expect in 2019!
2018 has been an interesting year for BLOCK71 Singapore. BLOCK71 is an initiative by NUS Enterprise, a known ecosystem builder in the startup community. This year, we delved deeper into the ecosystem by partnering with local MNCs to produce programs that disrupt major industries, and with overseas conglomerates to spearhead tech innovation in regional cities.
Building Ecosystem Within Industries
3 major programmes were launched this year, namely ICE71, PIER71, and SIA Accelerator Programme, in partnership with Singapore Airlines. ICE71 is the region’s first innovation cybersecurity ecosystem, jointly conceived by NUS Enterprise and Singtel Innov8. Their space is strategically located at BLOCK71 Singapore, Ayer Rajah Crescent. Likewise, PIER71 is a programme that is tailor-made for the maritime port industry to champion entrepreneurship, in partnership with Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Building Ecosystems Regionally
Together with Salim Group, BLOCK71 has further increased our global footprint by setting up incubation facilities in two other Indonesian cities – BLOCK71 Bandung and BLOCK71 Yogyakarta respectively. To date, there are 6 BLOCK71 globally in San Francisco, Suzhou, Jakarta, Bandung, and Yogyakarta, with its HQ in Singapore. Startups who are looking to expand or experiment with a soft landing in these cities can leverage on our ecosystem knowledge to ease starting up woes, and join our ever-expanding BLOCK71 family!

Building Close Knitted Communities
As the driver of entrepreneurship at the launchpad, BLOCK71 Singapore has held many signature events, such as BLOCK parties and KopiChat (fireside chats) to bring startup founders within the area together. The most notable BLOCK party we had this year was the Durian BLOCK Party – where over 300 people came together to feast on the seasonal fruit! This year, we also had the privilege of inviting Teo Ser Luck from Nufin Data and Lisabel Ting from SGEEK to join us in our monthly Kopichat, and engaging our in-house entrepreneurs in meaningful conversation. Mr Teo shared about his greatest takeaways from his personal business ventures since his departure from serving the public sector, while Lisabel provided useful insights on using data-driven content strategies, and the importance of credibility in today’s social media sphere.
It has been an exciting year with many new faces, emerging technologies and an active attempt to make the switch – going completely cashless.
What to expect in 2019?
In 2019, BLOCK71 plans to further embrace the digital realm with open, eager arms. We are looking for content creators to further educate the community on the next big thing in tech as well as insights to market access. Keen to co-create? Drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Wishing you all the best in the year ahead, and see you in 2019!
