In this week’s Entrepreneur Feature, we speak to Abhishek from Kinexcs, a start-up specialising in a 24/7 monitoring device for patients recovering from surgeries.

1. Who are you and what do you do?

Hi, I’m Abhishek from Kinexcs. I graduated from NTU with a degree in biomedical engineering 6 years back. I have been working in the industry for the last 4 years in oil and gas, in medical devices, in manufacturing. Currently, I am running a company called Kinexcs. Kinexcs is a medical device company which is building products and solutions for patients who have gone through orthopaedic surgeries such as knee or hip replacement surgeries.

2. What is Kinexcs’ secret sauce?

Kinexcs’ secret sauce is the proprietary sensing technology it is using as well as the continuous monitoring it is able to do. We are proud to say that we are the only ones in the market able to provide 24/7 continuous monitoring for up to 3 months after the surgery has taken place. The data we collect is extremely valuable for the clinicians to monitor the progress and recovery of the patients and to do prescriptions in a smart way which would lead to faster recovery and better outcomes.

3. What is next for Kinexcs?

Recently, we have started working with all three health systems in Singapore, the SingHealth Group, the National Healthcare Group, and the NUH Health System. We are at an exciting stage where some of these hospitals have already tried out our product and are ready to move on to large-scale patient trials. We are also expanding into overseas markets such as Australia and China. Both in our home market Singapore and overseas market there are plenty of new opportunities, relationships and experiences to create with our product and that is what we are looking forward to.

4. What is Kinexcs’ greatest challenge?

Our greatest challenge has been getting the market product fit right. With the product which comprises of both hardware and software solution, we were initially unsure about which target market segment would it most strongly relate to and would be most needed in. We overcame this challenge by aggressively going out there and talking to stakeholders in the ecosystem as well as directly talking to customers, doing product demonstrations, making sure people are comprehending our product and understanding the value it can add to their practice. We did this over a period of 6 months, talked to more than a hundred clinicians, went to more than 15 hospitals. Finally, as a result of all this work, we figured out that the inpatient rehabilitation department would be the most relevant market for us as the first beachhead for our product.

5. What is your best memory at BLOCK71?

The best memory of BLOCK71 is when I pitched to a panel of investors here and it led to a very strong interest in our product and subsequent investment into our company. BLOCK71 is a place where there are people from all over the world coming in and out all the time. You got people from places and companies you would never expect meeting and even investing in your company. By just being in BLOCK71 it happened and so that’s the best memory of BLOCK71.
